In the last years, a lot of producers are increasing the durability of the Hot Galvanized Metal Post painting the part inside the ground. This process helps the structure of the post to have more durability over the years. At the same time,  in order to not have an ugly aesthetic impact on the hills, the whole Metal Post can be painted with brown paint. This is a fundamental thing for those landscapes (for example Langhe – Unesco) where this aspect is considered crucial for the new vineyards planting.

 

What type of Zinc-Coated is the most suitable over the years?

 

Our Standard: Higly qualitative hot-dip galvanization.

Our profile distinguish themselves for the highly qualitative hot-dip galvanitation (single-piece) with addition of alluminium. The result of our hot-dip galvanization is a reasonable outer zinc layer with a typical thickness of 60 to 70 µm (approx. 850 g/m²) which extends the life of the posts to over 30 years. Single-piece hot-dip galvanitation is the process of subjecting the steel materila to a protective molten zinc at 450° C.

Expecting zinc life coating. How many years can a Hot Deep Galvanized Post goes on over the years?

 

If the post has been set correctly, a consumption of the of approximately 1 to 1.5 micron can be expected in the soil area of the posts by all type of galvanitation. For an hot-dip galvanized post, this means a lige span of over 45 years.

A rusting post still has a life of approximately 1 to 5 years, depending of the aggressiveness of the soil.

 

 

Zinc coating protects from rust

 

Steel has proved an excellent material for vineyard posts. It is economical, particularly stable and easy to work. Anyway, if bare steel is exposed to air humidity, it rusts within a short time loosing all its good material characteristics. This is the reason why a number of methods have been developed over the years to protect the surface of steel from corrosion.

 

                                  Zinc coating has proved particularly suitable for the following reasons:

  • zinc coats the steel providing a compact and robust protective layer.
  • during the hot-dip galvanization, an alloy layer is produced which firmly combines the steel with the zinc together.
  • on the zinc coating, a further protective patina layer forms from basic zinc carbonate.
  • as steel coating, zinc has a cathodic effect, i.e. the chemically less noble zinc “sacrifices” in favour of steel.
  • thanks to the sedimentation of zinc corrosion products, the “wounded” spots of the steel are passivated, i.e. they are protected against the destroying effect of rust.


During the single-piece hot-dip galvanization, steel posts - after being manufactured - are completely coated with a zinc layer in a bath of molten zinc. The zinc coating formed during this process has a thickness of 60 µm to 70 µm.

GALFAN® strip galvanized posts are manufactured from steel strips that have been previously galvanized. After profiling, the posts are immediately ready for use (lower production costs). Though, during the manufacturing process, the zinc layer is partly scraped off, pressed and streched. For this reason, it would be reasonable to coat the steel strips with so much zinc as possible but the thicker the zinc layer is, the easier the zinc coating cracks during profile shaping. Therefore, only thin zinc layers with a thickness up to approx. 25 µm can be reliably processed. In contrast to the single-piece hot-dip galvanization where the “natural” layer thickness of 60 µm to 70 µm cannot be modified, GALFAN® steel strips have a zinc layer thickness freely varying between 5 µm und 30 µm. In this case, it is worthwhile comparing among the various suppliers.

If the particular characteristics of a zinc coating are taken into account, the single-piece hot-dip galvanized posts reach a lifetime of more than 30 years. This information helps you with the right handling.
